What to submit

Do you have photographs or written sources from your family which describe homes and date from the colonial era? Examples may include, but are not limited to, pictures or descriptions of:

  • exteriors and interiors
  • furniture
  • soft furnishings (tablecloths, chintzes, wall hangings)
  • artwork
  • china
  • indigenous artefacts
  • floorplans
  • musical instruments
  • household books and advice

‘Homes’ may include:

  • grand estates
  • governor’s mansions
  • simple first homes
  • indigenous buildings
  • government-built houses
  • military barracks

We are also interested in how domestic objects and spaces influenced everyday life, so please share your own or inherited memories of experiences of domestic life under colonial rule. From head of the household to domestic servant, every experience is valuable.
